Last day! Thank goodness, it was a tiring week. This morning Ariana and I took our last bike ride downtown, grabbed coffee at my favorite place, Gregory's, and sat in Franklin Park awaiting the rest of the gang. William greeted us with breakfast food and coffee and it was delightful. Pulling tables and chairs together we made space for Olivier Laurent and Chloe Coleman. I was very excited to meet the two of them. Sometimes I prefer visits where we just chat in a park. It feels more personal when there are no slideshows that get in the way, no tours, just one on one questions and answers. I think this morning was the first time I really understood the extent of what an editor will do for photographers. They opened my eyes to the struggles of working with writers, how to search for photographers, and why they want to be editors. They offered some of the most honest answers I have heard. One comment in particular resonated with me was their discussion about written journalists and their lack of understanding of how important images are for stories. I asked them why they became editors and it was Chloe's answer that really resonated with me. She said when she was in school she was a TA and just really enjoyed that process. Looking at people's work, supporting them for the next time they go out into the field, and teaching. I find myself in a similar situation right now. I TA for Jenn and Josh and really enjoy giving advice and helping others. I certainly felt that way at Philmont this last summer as the photo manager for our marketing team. Although shooting in the field is my first love, I see editing as something to keep my eye on.
